Project Overview

E-Tech delivered a full fire protection upgrade for Johnson Controls International (JCI) under LTA Contract R178B1, replacing the conventional fire alarm system across the North-South MRT Line with a fully addressable detection and suppression platform. The project required executing a complex, phased migration across live, safety-critical transit infrastructure without disrupting rail operations at any stage.


Scope of Works

Addressable Fire Alarm System Replacement

All existing conventional detectors across the North-South MRT Line were replaced with new heat detectors, migrated onto a fully addressable fire alarm system. Addressable systems deliver precise point-of-fault identification, reducing response time and eliminating the zone-level ambiguity of conventional systems in a complex multi-station environment.

Linear Heat Detection (LHD) Installation

Linear Heat Detection systems were installed across designated high-risk areas along the line. LHD provides continuous temperature monitoring along cable runs, tunnels and plant rooms where spot detectors are impractical, delivering full linear coverage in areas where the consequence of a missed or delayed detection is highest.

Clean Agent Gas Suppression Systems

New Clean Agent gas suppression systems were commissioned to protect critical equipment rooms along the line. Clean Agent suppression is the appropriate technology for spaces housing sensitive electronic and electrical infrastructure, suppressing fire without causing water or residue damage to the equipment being protected.


Key Challenge: Live System Migration in an Active Rail Environment

The central challenge of this project was migrating the legacy conventional fire alarm system to the new fully addressable platform while maintaining a seamless live tie-in with the existing Local Control System (LCS), which feeds back to the Operations Control Centre (OCC) for the entire North-South Line.

At no point during the transition could fire safety coverage be broken. Every stage of the cutover required careful sequencing, technical precision and strict safety protocols to ensure that the OCC maintained continuous fire monitoring visibility across all stations and plant rooms throughout the works. Disruption to live rail operations was not an acceptable outcome at any phase of the project.

E-Tech managed this through disciplined phased commissioning, staging the migration station by station and system by system, with each new addressable zone verified and confirmed live before the parallel conventional circuit was retired. Every interface with the LCS was validated before and after each transition step.


What This Project Demonstrates

This project reflects E-Tech's capability in executing brownfield fire protection upgrades within live, safety-critical infrastructure. It requires a different discipline from greenfield installation work: understanding legacy systems deeply enough to interface with them, sequencing works without creating coverage gaps, and managing the technical handover between platforms under the operational constraints of a live transit environment.

The North-South MRT Line is one of Singapore's busiest and most operationally critical rail corridors. Delivering a full fire protection system upgrade across this environment, on schedule and without a single disruption to operations, is a demonstration of the precision, planning and site management capability E-Tech brings to infrastructure projects of this complexity.
